Tornado Damage: Impacts, Ratings & Costs
Understand tornado damage to homes, trees, vehicles, and farms, how it differs from financial loss, and what historical maps can tell you.
Tornadoes can damage buildings, trees, vehicles, utilities, and farmland. Understanding the effects means separating the severity of physical damage from its financial cost and human consequences.
What causes tornado damage?
Wind can strip roof materials, break structural connections, and displace objects. Debris adds impacts to the direct wind loading: pieces of buildings or trees can strike other structures. The NWS tornado impact guidance describes both building damage and airborne debris.
What can a tornado damage?

Does EF5 mean the most expensive tornado?
No. A rating, a monetary loss estimate, and a casualty count answer different questions. An event's economic impact depends on what was exposed as well as the damage. A high rating over sparsely developed land and a lower rating through a built-up area are not directly comparable by cost.

Why does damage vary along a tornado path?
The survey can find different degrees of damage at different locations. Differences in structures and their surroundings influence the evidence, while the event receives a single maximum supported rating. The same color along a track on this map does not mean every location experienced that rating.
Our lines connect recorded endpoints. They are not a surveyed damage boundary, and symbol thickness is not a to-scale footprint. A map line cannot establish whether a particular home was struck. Read the track guide for geometry and missing-data limits.
Explore records alongside the explanation
Alabama touchdown records on April 27, 2011 and Oklahoma touchdown records on May 20, 2013 provide dates to investigate. Select a record to see its original rating, reported path dimensions, injuries, and fatalities. These date selections may contain multiple tornadoes.
Why monetary damage needs separate interpretation
The source CSV has property-loss (loss) and crop-loss (closs) fields. They are not an extension of the F/EF scale. A damage rating describes intensity evidence; dollars describe reported economic loss.
Historical property values include broad loss categories as well as monetary amounts. The SPC field specification, April 2010 copy (PDF) also states that zero does not establish a zero-dollar loss. That older document does not validate the units of today's entire release.
We have not converted these fields into map values or totals. Doing so requires verified units for each period, treatment of unknowns, and checks against the underlying event reports. Whole-track losses also cannot be assigned entirely to the touchdown state when a tornado crosses a border.
A nominal amount uses dollars from the event's time. An inflation-adjusted amount expresses purchasing power in a specified comparison year; it must identify the adjustment method. Neither alone measures changes in building exposure or vulnerability. Our loss-data methodology explains the present limits.
Can damage alone prove that a tornado occurred?
Straight-line thunderstorm winds can also throw debris and knock down trees. Surveyors interpret the broader damage pattern and weather evidence. The NWS local damage-assessment guide explains why tree-fall direction alone is insufficient.
